China Junk postcard 1912, postal stationary, 1 cent, with hand-painted watercolour on the reverse (musician playing a pipa)
The motif of the nominal overprint, the five-colour flag (flag of the Republican Republic with five nationalities), was the national flag introduced by the Provisional Government of Nanjing and the Government of Beiyang when the Republic of China was founded on 10 January 1912. It was also the first legal national flag of the Republic of China. The flag consists of five horizontal stripes in the colours red, yellow, blue, white and black in a ratio of 5:8. Red, yellow, blue, white and black respectively represent the republic of the five ethnic groups: Han, Manchu, Mongol, Hui and Tibetan. The five selected colours are the colours traditionally favoured by the five ethnic groups and symbolise the republic of the five ethnic groups.
